Another Perspective: The Brawl Delay

Posted in Another Perspective on January 15, 2008 by Philip Ehrenberg

I’m sure many a gamer awoke this morning to this notice. And I’m sure they stared in shock, trying to take cognizance of what had been rumored for at least two weeks. For some, that shock turned to sadness, but the great majority of them, I bet, turned to anger and threw their computer monitor out the closest window. That’s unfortunate, because then they can’t read Mom’s Basement and we lose a portion of our audience, but that’s what happens when Nintendo delays games.

The Return of Kid Icarus Part 2: Reinvention

Posted in Short Editorials on January 14, 2008 by Sherlock

A new Kid Icarus on the DS or Wii, especially in full 3D, would be a dream come true for many gamers. Unfourtunately, there are a few obstacles that will likely disrupt the process of making a great Icarus game that is faithful to the original.

Let’s work on our Time Management skills

Posted in Editorials on January 12, 2008 by Ando

It was during one my most recent late night (you can read this as midnight) gaming sessions that I was hit with a most unsettling thought. As I fought back the weariness that was dragging down my eyelids, I paused Mass Effect to give it one last save before I gave the bad guys what was coming to them. But as my screen quietly told me not to turn off the power, I couldn’t help but notice that something wasn’t right. I tried to put my finger on it for a few seconds, and then I realized what I was staring at. My save file proudly beamed back at me a simple message; I have now been playing for more than 30 hours.

For some this may be your regular dose of gaming, but I think most would agree this isn’t just a drop in the bucket. I should be ecstatic that this single play-through has lasted me so long. Here I am, making the last push to save the galaxy from complete annihilation, my enemy before me and my girl at my side, and its managed to take me more than 30 hours to achieve. It isn’t often that a game can garner that much playtime, yet I was now looking it in the face. Somehow this game had pulled me into the epic experience of traipsing around the galaxy for sidequest after sidequest, and now with the final minutes closing in, I couldn’t help but feel that maybe some of that time could have been better spent.

Roundtable #1: The Wii and DS’ First Years

Posted in Roundtables on January 11, 2008 by Philip Ehrenberg

Something pretty unique that we’re trying to do here at Mom’s Basement is get a roundtable up once a week. Our version of a podcast, we hope to get a number of individuals discussing a certain topic where all of you reading get a better idea of where our opinions fall. Hopefully you’ll enjoy our first one!

Shvitzel: There are obvious connections between the Wii and the DS. Nintendo has even gone on the record stating that the Wii has truly reached the casual audience, but the DS was where they started experimenting with their expansion ideas. Now that the Wii’s first year is up, we here at Mom’s Basement thought we might discuss how the Wii’s first year could be likened to that of the DS’.

Every Smash fan who owns a DS craves a Smash Bros. game on the DS. But lets face it, we aren’t getting it. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a Smash-style game on the DS.

Freedom! Grasshopper Manufacture

Independent development studios are all over the world, and they don’t have to play by “The Man”’s (aka, publishers), rules. They can make what games they want, when they want, and they get publishers to pay for the distribution of the game for them. This feature focuses on these studios.

The Return of Kid Icarus

The Return of Kid Icarus

Part 1

Kid Icarus seems to be a tragically forgotten and overlooked game. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to play it untill recently, but it did not fail to impress. Its easily one of the most truely breathtaking and beautiful games I’ve ever played. I’m pretty excited that Pit is back for Smash Bros. Brawl.

However, I’m also concerned.

Warp Pipe to Infinity: Brawling Through Galaxies

Posted in Warp Pipe to Infinity on January 7, 2008 by Philip Ehrenberg

First of all, welcome to Warp Pipe to Infinity! This is my personal series of articles where I detail a concept idea for a stage I’d like to see appear in some game. Perhaps this game is announced, or perhaps it is not and is merely from a whim or my own personal imagination. Regardless, you will be privy to my creative ideas for stages and perhaps even some drawings of them. Occasionally, you may even get to read my complete game ideas.

Anyway, what used to be in everyone’s Wii for weeks? Super Mario Galaxy, I’ll bet. And what’s on everyone’s minds right now? Why, none other than Super Smash Bros. Brawl! What would happen if we combined the two…..?

Welcome!

Posted in Blog Updates on January 7, 2008 by Philip Ehrenberg

Welcome everyone to Mom’s Basement!

We’re a number of gamers who decided that we needed to start a blog. A fancy of our deepest imaginations, we decided we need a place to act silly and complain where people would hopefully read and agree, becoming our disciples. If you don’t, that’s cool too, but it isn’t the preferable response.

Since we do have a number of excellent writers working here, it should be noted that one’s opinions may not necessarily coincide with that of everyone else’s. In fact, they may be completely off. Hopefully, our roundtable discussions will provide an excellent forum for you all to witness our varying opinions vying off for the gold.

Thanks for finding your way here, and enjoy!
