The Writers’ Games of the Year

We here at Mom’s Basement felt like we should do a 2007 Game of the Year discussion just to truly establish us as a gaming blog. However, leave it to us to leave it until the last week of January, and we still only have six writers contributing. Oh well, you snooze (and ignore everyone’s communications for a few weeks) and you lose. Enjoy!

Sherlock – Hotel Dusk: Room 215: Although it slipped under the radar, Hotel Dusk had a fantastic mystery story that quite simply had me hooked from beginning to end. It had well developed and mature storytelling and characters, a unique visual style, and it did some interesting things with the DS’ technology. Hopefully Cing will bless us with another mystery like this in the future.

Runner Up: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Roundtable #2: Mom’s Basement and the Mysterious RPG

For those that cannot read or clearly make out the text: “Next month’s cover story is an RPG so fantastic, so engrossing, so epic, and so hush-hush that we’d have to erase your memories if we told you what it is. In fact, maybe we already did. Role-playing fans, get ready for a big one.”

Shvitzel: Obviously, there’s a lot that could come out of this. We could see a long wanted sequel, something not that great, or merely an epic game that has yet to be localized. What are your thoughts?

Roundtable #1: The Wii and DS’ First Years

Something pretty unique that we’re trying to do here at Mom’s Basement is get a roundtable up once a week. Our version of a podcast, we hope to get a number of individuals discussing a certain topic where all of you reading get a better idea of where our opinions fall. Hopefully you’ll enjoy our first one!

Shvitzel: There are obvious connections between the Wii and the DS. Nintendo has even gone on the record stating that the Wii has truly reached the casual audience, but the DS was where they started experimenting with their expansion ideas. Now that the Wii’s first year is up, we here at Mom’s Basement thought we might discuss how the Wii’s first year could be likened to that of the DS’.
