Spoiled

Posted in Short Editorials on January 30, 2008 by Patrick McNamara

How one man’s search for everything only got him nothing.

I had delved into the treasure trove; I had obtained its secrets. At that moment, I knew everything that it could ever provide me. It was clever, but It couldn’t hold on forever. I knew that one day it’s secrets would be disclosed to the public. This was my moment of triumph. Ladies and Gentlemen, at this point in time I, Smeags, know all there is to know about Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Read more »

No More Heroes Hands On

Posted in Previews on January 26, 2008 by Jonny The Pie King

I’d like to start this off with telling you readers that I’ve been hyped for this game for some time. Well, since the game existed in the form of Suda’s Revolution Project (then the hype boosted when it became “Heroes”). As a huge fan of Killer7, this was probably to be expected, but the game has finally released stateside, and I have to say…

The Writers’ Games of the Year

Posted in Roundtables on January 26, 2008 by Philip "Shvitzel" Ehrenberg

We here at Mom’s Basement felt like we should do a 2007 Game of the Year discussion just to truly establish us as a gaming blog. However, leave it to us to leave it until the last week of January, and we still only have six writers contributing. Oh well, you snooze (and ignore everyone’s communications for a few weeks) and you lose. Enjoy!

Sherlock – Hotel Dusk: Room 215: Although it slipped under the radar, Hotel Dusk had a fantastic mystery story that quite simply had me hooked from beginning to end. It had well developed and mature storytelling and characters, a unique visual style, and it did some interesting things with the DS’ technology. Hopefully Cing will bless us with another mystery like this in the future.

Runner Up: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Posted in Previews on January 25, 2008 by Philip "Shvitzel" Ehrenberg

Something is fishy in the tucked away village of St. Mystere. The wealthy Baron Reinhold has died and in his will, he has revealed that there is a mysterious object known as the Golden Apple hidden somewhere in the burg. Lady Dahlia has called Professor Layton and his lovable apprentice Luke to the hamlet to find the treasured item, but while there, someone is murdered. Numerous mysteries plague the village, such as the history behind an abandoned amusement park, and a bumbling investigator insists on getting in your way. And why are all of the village’s inhabitants so reluctant to talk about what is arguably the most intriguing attraction of their lovely town: the clock tower that rises above all other buildings?

Recliner of Rage: McMario

Posted in Editorials on January 23, 2008 by Sherlock

There is a lot of anger in the world today. Between rising oil prices, wars, and political scandals, tempers are really rising.

But there is one among us tonight who is particularly angry. He knows how you feel, and he is ready to articulate it. He is Sherlock. I am Sherlock, and I might as well be comfortable while I speak for the world.

I am comfortable and furious.

I love the Mario franchise. I remember sitting as a young child watching in awe as my neighbors played all summer long. I was incredibly excited, and satisfied, when I got my very first Mario game, Super Mario Bros Deluxe for the Gameboy Color. However, in recent times I have noticed a change in my favourite plumber.

Unsolved Mysteries: The Koopalings

Posted in Editorials on January 22, 2008 by Patrick McNamara

These are untold stories of Lost Love, the Missing, Fugitives, and Murder. Hello, my name is Smeags. And this is Unsolved Mysteries.

MISSING

SYNOPSIS: It all began in the winter of 1990. The Super Mario Bros. were once again saving the world from the evil clutches of King Bowser. This time, however, things were a little different than before. This time, the mustached heroes faced a new nemesis: The Koopalings. Questions ensued: Who were these new adversaries, and where did they come from? Our top researchers show that these koopalings are in fact the legitimate children of King Bowser himself. The mother has yet to be identified. Why Bowser would not reveal these seven children until that point in time has yet to be confirmed.

However, the Mario Bros. latest adventure wouldn’t the last time we’d see these mischievous children. Insiders have informed us that Larry, Wendy O., Ludwig Von, Morton Jr., Iggy, Lemmy, and Roy were also seen in Dinosaur Land in the Summer of 1991, on a Safari in 1993, when Mario was missing in the Summer of 1994, and in Hotel Mario sometime later that year. This, ladies and gentlemen, is where the mystery really begins. Read more »

Game Standards MUST Drop!

Posted in Editorials on January 19, 2008 by AtownKED

Many people would wonder what I mean by saying game standards must drop, but by the end of this you will understand completely, whether you agree or not. It happens every generation: consoles become more powerful; the effect of that is gaming standards must rise to the occasion. You can’t release a more powerful console and have worse games than your last one. Better graphics, better gameplay, more features, more controller buttons, everything goes up. The absolute worst thing to rise, however, is price. The cost of production increases, the floor price of the games and consoles become more expensive as well. Of course we still pay; it’s not like we have any other option.

Roundtable #2: Mom’s Basement and the Mysterious RPG

Posted in Roundtables on January 18, 2008 by Philip "Shvitzel" Ehrenberg

For those that cannot read or clearly make out the text: “Next month’s cover story is an RPG so fantastic, so engrossing, so epic, and so hush-hush that we’d have to erase your memories if we told you what it is. In fact, maybe we already did. Role-playing fans, get ready for a big one.”

Shvitzel: Obviously, there’s a lot that could come out of this. We could see a long wanted sequel, something not that great, or merely an epic game that has yet to be localized. What are your thoughts?

Another Perspective: The Brawl Delay

Posted in Another Perspective on January 15, 2008 by Philip "Shvitzel" Ehrenberg

I’m sure many a gamer awoke this morning to this notice. And I’m sure they stared in shock, trying to take cognizance of what had been rumored for at least two weeks. For some, that shock turned to sadness, but the great majority of them, I bet, turned to anger and threw their computer monitor out the closest window. That’s unfortunate, because then they can’t read Mom’s Basement and we lose a portion of our audience, but that’s what happens when Nintendo delays games.
